Whether you crave extreme action, natural beauty, or new challenges, these spring break ideas are designed to turn your time off into an adventure you’ll never forget.

Interlaken, Switzerland

Interlaken is the adventure hub of the European backpacker circuit, with Balmer’s Hostel being the accommodation of choice. The town is full of travelers looking to jump out of airplanes and hurtle themselves off steep canyons. Popular adventure options in Interlaken include skydiving, canyoning, rafting, bungee jumping, paragliding, ice climbing, biking, hiking and high ropes courses, all embedded in the beautiful scenery of the Swiss Alps.

Durango, Colorado

If you’re looking to get your adrenaline pumping in the US, Durango, Colorado is one of the most adventurous cities in the country. Activities offered include zip lining, canyoning, rock and ice climbing, skiing, kayaking, rafting, canoeing, mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding and more. With an array of terrains and the nearby San Juan Mountains, there’s always something to do. Make sure to also hike, bike or horseback ride on the Colorado Trail, which stretches almost 500 miles (804 km) between Denver and Durango and encompasses six wilderness areas and eight mountain ranges. If you trek the whole way, we recommend heading from Durango to Denver, as completing the trail the other way features a lengthy climb in elevation—you’ll top out at just over 13,000 feet (4,000 meters). Or, if you're pressed for time, make the trek to Denver in a car.

Baños, Ecuador

For the budget-friendly adventure vacation, make your way to Baños, Ecuador. Expect canyoning trips with lunch for around $30, whitewater rafting for $30, bungee jumping for $20 and trips to the Amazon for $35 per day, including all food and accommodation. There is also a scenic 38-mile (61 km) waterfall route you can bike and see five impressive waterfalls. To rent a bike in Banos costs about $5-$10 for the day depending on what quality you get, and you’ll pay $2.50 total admission to walk to the last two waterfalls on the route. If you’re too tired at the end to bike back, the bus costs $1.

Turrialba, Costa Rica

As a whole, Costa Rica is a very adventurous destination. Because of its diverse environment, however, Turrialba is perfect for all types of outdoor sports. Immerse yourself in canyoning, canopying, hiking, biking, horseback riding and caving. The main attraction of the area, however, is the world-class white water rafting on the Pacuare River. Additionally, this charming and culturally-rich town is one of the few destinations in Costa Rica offering easy access to a volcano crater.

Cairns, Australia

Feeling up for an adventure that’s halfway around the world? What could be a better Spring Break activity than scuba diving Australia’s Great Barrier Reef? This is just one of the many adventures offered in Cairns. Others include white water rafting the famous Tully River, sky diving over beautiful Mission Beach, hot air ballooning over the lush Atherton Tableland, jungle surfing at Cape Tribulation and water skiing at Lake Tinaroo. (To name a few!)
