Our Sustainability Promise: Chasing Responsible Adventure

Our Sustainability Promise: Chasing Responsible Adventure

Written by Eagle Creek on

Eagle Creek was established in 1975 by Steve and Nona Barker, a couple who revered the planet and explored it accordingly. In the process, they invented an entirely new product category: adventure travel gear. Half a century later, no one offers more expertly conceived and crafted gear for experiencing the earth in every hemisphere. Thoughtful, sustainable, function-forward solutions inspired by the belief that travel can be a force for good.

TL;DR:

Eagle Creek's sustainability promise is built on a philosophy of chasing responsible adventure. We design with thoughtful materials and partnerships, we build gear that lasts and repair what breaks, and we do what we can to keep products in circulation. Sustainability isn't a destination here; it's an ongoing journey that customers can join by choosing to buy better and waste less.

Chasing Responsible Adventure

We travel to engage with the world, which means protecting it comes with the territory. Sustainability isn't a campaign or a season for us. It's our guiding principle: in the materials we source, the factories we partner with, the gear we repair, and the communities we show up for. Every part of our business is on the table, and we're always looking for ways to do better.

The idea is simple: Improve every part of the process, then start again and reach for better. Here's what that looks like in practice.

How We Create

Responsible design starts long before a product reaches your hands. We put serious thought into every material choice, from proprietary recycled fabrics to the specific stitching and dye methods. Many of our products are made with recycled content, including post-consumer recycled fabric made from plastic that would otherwise end up in landfills. We work with the best available resources to guide those choices and push our manufacturing processes forward.

We've also worked to eliminate intentionally used PFAS, also known as forever chemicals, from all of our products. These chemicals have long been common in outdoor gear for water resistance, but their persistence in the environment and human body makes them incompatible with how we think about responsible manufacturing.

That same attention carries into our factory relationships. We don't chase the cheapest option, we invest in decades-long partnerships with manufacturers who meet high standards for worker pay, conditions, and ethical practices. These aren't one-time audits. They're ongoing relationships built on accountability.

How We Endure

The most responsible product is one that doesn't need to be replaced. So, we build gear to last and then stand behind it.

Our No Matter What® Warranty is a lifetime guarantee on every piece of Eagle Creek gear. If your gear is dropped, dragged, rolled over, or otherwise beaten up in transit, we'll repair it and get you back out there. Our repair-first approach keeps bags in use and out of landfills, and it means you're investing in gear that's built to go the distance, not just the first few trips.

Durability isn't just a selling point. It's one of the most tangible ways we can reduce the impact of what we make.

How We Grow

We’re always seeking ways to better our business. Our new RePack Program is Eagle Creek's official peer-to-peer resale platform: a place to find a new home for pre-loved gear and shop items that are ready for their next adventure. It's a straightforward way to extend the life of products that still have plenty of miles left in them, and to keep quality gear out of the waste stream.

Beyond resale, we're continually evolving how we operate: adapting our materials, our processes, and our partnerships as better options become available. We partner with community-driven organizations that promote cultural integrity and work to protect the natural and cultural places that make travel worth taking. Because if we're asking people to explore the world, we also have a responsibility to help preserve it.

We're active members of the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) and the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA), two organizations working to raise the bar for sustainability and responsible business across the industry. We also support the Adventure Travel Conservation Fund (ATCF) to help spotlight projects that defend cultural integrity and environmental resources, all in the effort of better adventure travel stewardship.

Our leadership shows up beyond our own operations, too. Eagle Creek's Owner and CEO Travis Campbell speaks publicly on environmental issues, including the protection of public lands, because companies in this space have an obligation to use their voices to help protect the places we love to explore.

The Journey Continues—And You're Part of It

Sustainability is exactly that: a journey. We commit to chasing better, higher standards: keep improving, keep learning, and start again. From the first stitch to the last resale, we're working to make every part of what we do a little more responsible than it was before.

But this isn't just on us. Every purchase is a choice, and choosing gear that's built to last, made with better materials, and backed by a lifetime warranty is one of the most tangible ways you can be a more responsible traveler. When you buy less and buy better, when you repair instead of replace, and resell instead of discard, you're part joining out efforts to chase more responsible adventure.
