Steep Slopes & Sweet Treats: 3 Tips for Making the Most of Your Ski Trip

Written on

Fresh snow, crisp mountain air, hot chocolate, and great company: there’s plenty to love about ski trips. Whether your dream ski vacation involves hitting the slopes at sunrise for a spot on that coveted first chair or playing an afternoon game of cards in the lodge while sipping a hot toddy, the right planning can make your next ski trip unforgettable.

Ready to hit the slopes? Here are three tips for making the most of your upcoming ski trips.

1. Consider the Climate

Everyone loves crisp mountain air, a bluebird day, and the wind on their faces as they cruise down the slopes. As you soak up the smell of pine trees and the feeling of sunshine, be sure to remember that air is thinner in higher elevations and winter weather is less humid. This combination means that hydrating, protective products are key to staying comfortable on the slopes.

Be sure to pack lip balm, a facial sunscreen with broad spectrum SPF, and any other moisturizing products. If you’re hoping to snag the first chairlift ride of the day, save yourself time in the morning by using a travel toiletry bag that keeps your products organized and accessible. You’ll thank yourself when you’re the only one at the dinner table without a goggle tan (or burn) and chapped lips!

2. Map Out a Course

A perfect day on the slopes starts with the right preparation. Making the first tracks in fresh powder starts with an early wake-up call, and hitting all your favorite runs takes a little planning. Chat with your friends or family ahead of time to plan a loose itinerary for your days on the slopes.

Your adventurous friends might wear a water-resistant carry on backpack with energy-boosting snacks so they can shred from dawn to dusk. Or, you might opt to get a few early runs in before retiring to the lodge for a game of cards and a mug of hot cocoa. Everyone’s ideal ski trip looks different, so planning ahead will manage expectations and help you make the most of your time.

3. Save Time to Explore

Do you and your family return to the same resort town every year? Or are you finally visiting your friend who moved to Colorado years ago? Whether you’re traveling to a ski destination that you know like the back of your hand or heading to an entirely new place, finding time to explore will make your trip even more memorable.

The guy you chat with on the chairlift might give you tips on where to find a pristine natural hot spring, or the host of your rental house might recommend a few local restaurants. You’ll be glad you set aside extra time to explore, and your legs might appreciate the break from all those black diamond runs.
