Eagle Creek Hovercraft 22

I took Eagle Creek up on their lifetime warranty when my last Eagle Creek bag got caught in an escalator. The first replacement they sent was the 20 Hovercraft. Called & explained I really needed the detachable clip. It is in pictures for 20, but only comes on 22 and up size bags. They replaced it with a 22 Hovercraft, no questions asked.
I used the bag for a trip to Ireland & England. It qualified as a carry-on even though the airline had me put it in the metal frame to be sure. I was amazed at everything I could fit into it and how light and mobile the bag is. EC pack-it cubes and folders make packing for travel so easy & organized. I just purchased EC pack-it sets for family members going on trip to Europe next year.

Used my Hovercraft 22 for over three weeks in Germany, the Baltic States and Finland. It was spacious, easy to pack with EC cubes, and I had rooms to take gifts to friends. I packed an extra small case, just in case, but didn't need it. I never had to use the expansion zipper. I checked the bag this time, but will probably carry it on in the future to save a few $$.

I selested this bag as a replacement for an old Tumi. I selected it because it seemed to have more capacity with its flexible sides and lid, and its many innovative features. And it was 60% less expensive. After several trips I've found it to live up to my expectations. It's extremely lightweight, has spacious pockets and the folders and cubes fit perfectly. Compressing your clothes with the folders and using a suitcase that expands lets you carry more with this bag than any other 22 inch I've used.

I bought this bag recently for a 3 week trip to Thailand coming up in 11/07, so I haven't put it through its full set of paces, but it seems to be quite well made and well designed. I will leave a post-trip report on the performance of the bag. Like all rolling 22" cases that I considered, there are positives and negatives based on our own priorities. I always use the Eagle Creek pack-it folders and cubes, and totally love their functionality, so this bag being geared towards these organizers was a big plus for me. Trial packing the case has shown me that all fits beautifully inside with them. This bag is unbelievably light - the lightest on the market, I believe. Eagle Creek achieves this by making the sides of the case frameless and thus softer than most other rolling bags, with no substantial supports in the upper half. It is actually somewhat like a backpack attached to a rolling frame and handle. The interior space is generally good, but the channel for the handle inside the bag takes up quite a bit of potential packing space. The handle is nicely made, and even though the support tubing for it going into the case seems loose, I think it will do fine in use. The wheels do not roll as easily as those on a Travelpro Platinum 5, as a lighter wheel design has replaced a more traditional rollerblade wheel on this case. The zippers all seem of high quality, and operate smoothly. Handles for lifting the bag on the top and on the side are nicely padded and very comfortable to lift the case with. The outside zippered pockets are nicely placed and helpful. I've always liked Eagle Creek's level of quality, design, and customer service, and calling them for info and guidance on this bag was also as exceptionally helpful as always. I look forward to many trouble-free years with this bag.
